While Champagne (the region and the wine) continues to be the benchmark for sparkling wine from around the world, other regions continue to craft compellingly beautiful sparkling wines; can we tell them apart? Two flights of four sparkling wines -- each featuring a Champagne (Chateau du Champagne Bligny), a Cava (El Bosc), a Franciacorta (Ca del Bosco) and New Mexico's own (Gruet) -- will be tasted. The first flight is tasted open with characteristics noted with our Master Sommeliers. The second flight is tasted blind with guests asked to pick the region.

Join SFWF Honorée of the year, Violet Grgich, and discover this iconic winery’s fascinating history when she leads this vertical tasting to celebrate Grgich Hills Estate’s 40th anniversary this year. This limited-production tasting focuses on the wines most associated with Miljenko “Mike” Grgich’s legendary career, crafted from some of the oldest vines in the Grgich estate vineyards.

Violet will showcase the Old Wente clone Chardonnay planted more than 20 years ago, obtained from famed grower Larry Hyde and planted in Grgich Hills Estate Carneros Vineyard. The Napa Valley is famed for Cabernet Sauvignon and this tasting allows you explore the differences between an aged wine from our Yountville and Rutherford vineyards, 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from Grgich's Rutherford Vineyard and the Yountville Old Vine Cabernet Sauvignon grown on vines more than a half century old, planted in 1959 to the Inglenook clone from what is now Francis Ford Coppola’s Inglenook winery, on St. George rootstock in Yountville.

Wine Seminar: 2005 Burgundy (Volnay and Montrachet)

September 29, 2017 | 12:30pm - 1:30pm

Santa Fe Community Convention Center

Master of Wine (and Burgundy specialist) Clive Coates wrote two years ago when tasting the 2005 Burgundies: "Now ten years old, the red wines are well deserving of all the bally-hoo they engendered
at the outset. Few past vintages come close. Perhaps the nearest is 1999. The relative shortness of the 2005 crop can be seen in the concentration of the wines. They also have depth, finesse, harmony and the potential to last. What more do yo want?" Join our Master Somm team for a rare tasting of five Volnay Premier Cru Reds from the magnificent 2005 vintage (Jean Marc Boillot, Henri Boillot, Nicolas Rossignol, Louis Jadot) and three 2005 white Burgundy's from Montrachet - Domaine Vincent Giradin
Chassagne Montrachet Les Blanchots 1er Cru, Domaine Paul Perno Puligny-Montrachet Les Folarieres 1er Cru and Domaine Camille Girous Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru.

Wine Seminar: Fontanafredda Barolo Vertical with Brian Cronin, Master Sommelier

September 29, 2017 | 3:00pm - 4:00pm

The story of Fontanafredda began in 1858 when Vittorio Emanuele II, the first king of Italy, purchased the estate (a former hunting preserve) in order to produce fine Barolo for his personal use. Master Sommelier Brian Cronin introduces a seven-vintage vertical of Fontanafredda Serralunga d'Alba
Barolo that emphasizes why since 1878, Fontanafredda, located in the heart of the Langhe region, has been a benchmark for authentically-styled Barolo that deftly balance intense aromas and deep concentration of fruit with outstanding finesse and elegance.
